Managing Our Water Supply - Kylee Brooks
Should we worry about droughts? A local problem in Arizona would be managing our water
supply. Our state's rapidly growing population has resulted in more and more people moving
here worldwide, making our water supply increasingly limited. Another major factor of this
local problem is climate change, which has brought many deep concerns to residents about the
difficulty of finding water in our desert state. This problem affects us significantly, potentially
leading to a shortage of clean drinking water, and a reduced supply of fruits and vegetables
from farms, among other concerns
People who would be interested in this local problem would be residents of Arizona, environmentalists, farmers, businesses, and government officials. Residents of Arizona would be concerned about having access to clean drinking water and clean water for various other purposes. Environmental advocates would be concerned about the climate change causing the droughts, they may feel as if addressing this concern would help bring awareness of our planet and also help preserve our environment. Businesses, especially industries dependent on a water supply, would be impacted. Government officials would also need to address this problem. Finally, farmers would have a difficult time with agriculture because in order for their crops to grow they need plenty of water, a shortage of water would put their crops and livelihoods at risk.
Most may have already heard this information of this ongoing drought issue from the news, social media, or newspapers. The biggest challenge would be to have others become more aware of this local issue too. Some individuals, including teenagers or adults who may not prioritize such issues, and may not take it as seriously. However this is a very important topic and needs more attention brought upon it, I feel the best way to do this is by encouraging everyone to help spread awareness by social media. Social media is huge and powerful in our society and I definitely feel as if it would help.
How else do we fix this? “One of the easiest steps we can take to help mitigate the impacts of drought is conserving water. If we use water wisely at all times, more water will be available to us and to plants and wildlife when a drought happens”- National Drought Mitigation Center. This includes conserving our water by using water-saving devices and recycling our water.
